Rods and Reels for Bass Fishing

There are many types of bass fishing rods and bass fishing reels available. If you are new to fishing or new to bass fishing the variety can be pretty overwhelming.

If you are keen on taking up bass fishing as a sport you will need to buy a few bass fishing rod and reel combinations that can be used for different purposes.
Different types of baits require different types of rod and reel combination so you will need a few rods and reels to interchange.

One of the challenges with bass fishing is working out which bass fishing rods and reel suit the fishing that you are going to do. If you just want to start slow try and get a baitcasting outfit as it is quite versatile in its use.
Spinning Outfit

A spinning outfit is a bass fishing rod and reel combination that is good to use with grubs and other light lures doing what the experienced anglers call “finesse fishing”. You use a light line and light lures to cast grubs, work jerkbaits and other small, lightweight lures. You should try and use 6 to 12 pound test line for this with bass fishing rods that are 6 to 7 feet long and feature medium action.

Baitcaster Outfit

A pistol grip style baitcasting rod is one of the most useful, versatile and comfortable to use for fishing spinnerbaits. A baitcasting rod is usually 5 ½ to 6 feet long and uses medium to medium-heavy action. This rod and bass fishing reel combination is best used for short, precise casts. The pistol grip makes it really easy to aim for specific targets.

Triggerstick

If you are pitching jigs you will need a triggerstick. A triggerstick is a straight-handled baitcasting rod usually 6 ½ to 7 feet in length. You can use a triggerstick with plastic worms, weedless jigs, jerkbaits and even for larger and heavier baits. The extra length allows for longer casting giving you more versatility.

Fiberglass and Graphite

Your fishing equipment should comprise a good quality fiberglass or graphite bass fishing rod. Because the material these rods are made of is light and flexible they are good to even pick up little nibbles.Fiberglass rods are a little heavier than the graphite but they provide a better ability to hook fish with a single action. By comparison the graphite rods are more sensitive and lightweight making them perfect for many situations.

Heavyweight baitcasting combination

For flipping heavy jigs or texas-rigged worms into dense cover you’ll need a heavyweight rod and reel combination. These durable sets will help you get through dense cover, weeds and even submerged brush. You will need to practice with these rods and get used to the flip action. The rods are extra stiff to literally jerk bass out of the thick cover and you will need a strong line to support this.
