Bass Lures

A no fuss alternative to fishing for bass with bait is to use lures. Bass Lures give you a range of ways to attract the type of bass that you want which often bait will not do.  The advantage of using bass lures is in their flexibility for the purpose.

You can buy lures for on top of the water or close to the surface or heavier lures for deeper fishing.  Using lures is another skill in itself and one of the many tricks of bass fishing that make it challenging and rewarding. Some common materials that artificial lures are made of include metal, wood, and plastic.

There are lots of bass fishing tips and tricks for using lures.  The first tip is that you must get a lure that is designed to be flexible in a variety of colours, shapes and styles.  If you have a good variety of lures you can change them around to test which ones the bass prefer in the area you are fishing in.

Plugs

These lures are designed to resemble baitfish.  They are used underwater and often made to replicate the wiggling and wobbling action that makes them more attractive to bass fish.  If you are trying to catch a Smallmouth bass you can use a lure that is 2 to 3 inches long.  If it is the Largemouth bass that you want to haul home for dinner you will need a larger lure about of 3-5 inches long.  Your lure size should be in proportion to the size of the bass fish you are trying to catch and resemble the fish’s choice of food.

Top water lures

Like the name says these lures are used on the top of the water.   They are made to resemble insects, flies, frogs, injured minnows, or even mice that fall on top of the water.  These lures are great to catch bass fish when they feed on the surface of the water.  This type of fishing is exciting because you actually can see the fish strike the bait on the top of the water when they are feeding rather than hauling up from depth.

Spinnerbaits

Spinnerbaits use metal blades to make a spinning action underwater.  This spinning attracts bass through sound vibrations and by sight.  They are easy to use and work extremely well in dark or murky water conditions which is what they are designed for.  The blades come in various sizes and shapes based on the size fish you want to catch.  There is quite a large range so you can try a few out and see which ones you are more comfortable with.

Soft Plastic Lures

Worms are the most common plastic lures and they  come in different shapes, sizes and colors. You can even get pre-rigged plastic lures which already have the hook built in and are the easiest to use. Some plastic lures already have attractants built in to attract the bass fish. Throw your plastic lures into your fishing box, grab your rod and away you go. You can use these soft lures on the surface or under water.  To get the most out of your plastic lures use them  in low wind conditions where they work the best.
